PRESS RELEASES: IMPORTANT: Court Notice to Pending I-360s Applicants
Thursday, July 02 @ 12:43:40 EDT by Staff (8 reads)
Area News for HispanicsOn June 11, 2009, the United States District Court for the Western District of Washington issued an order in Ruiz-Diaz v. U.S., No. C07-1881RSL (W.D. Wash.). The court found that 8 CFR § 245.2(a)(2)(i)(B), which does not allow religious workers to concurrently file an Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status (Form I-485), was invalid and unenforceable. The court ordered USCIS to accept a properly filed I-485 and I-765 from a beneficiary of a religious worker I-360.

The court order has invalidated USCIS’ bar against concurrent filings as an unreasonable interpretation of the statute. Pursuant to the June 11th order, USCIS is required to accept a properly filed I-485 (and I-765) application from individuals who are beneficiaries of I-360s, whether submitted concurrently with or subsequent to the visa petitions, provided the application(s) meet USCIS’ filing requirements. As such petitioners who filed or will file an I-360 with USCIS on behalf of individual beneficiaries are being notified that they may now file an I-485 and, if seeking employment, an I-765, even if USCIS has not yet issued a final decision regarding the I-360.

The court order also allows individuals whose concurrent filings were previously rejected to reapply for adjustment of status. The order accords a spouse and children of I-360 beneficiaries the same benefits.

Please do not hesitate to let us know if you have any questions. Thank you.

PRESS RELEASES: Onorato, Ravenstahl Announce PGH G-20 Partnership of Public & Private Organizati
Thursday, July 02 @ 12:40:51 EDT by Staff (8 reads)
Chamber Affiliate NewsPITTSBURGH (June 30, 2009) – Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato and Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl today announced the formation of the Pittsburgh G-20 Partnership, a public-private partnership of organizations that are providing time, talent and resources to serve as local hosts for the G-20 summit meeting on September 24 & 25 at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center.

Earlier this month, the City and County announced a series of public brainstorming sessions designed to elicit ideas on the best way for Pittsburgh to welcome the meeting of the heads of state of the 19 countries and European Union who together represent 90 percent of the global gross national product, 80 percent of world trade, and two-thirds of the world’s population.

Onorato and Ravenstahl said the brainstorming process yielded more than 400 distinctive ideas and more than 1,000 volunteers.

“The community sessions demonstrated the great enthusiasm Pittsburghers have for the summit and their overriding interest in ensuring that it’s a clean, green and welcoming event for world leaders, journalists and visitors,” said Onorato. “We want to thank Point Park University, Robert Morris University and the University of Pittsburgh for hosting the sessions, as well as the hundreds of citizens who turned out to offer their best ideas.”

PRESS RELEASES: US Hispanic Chamber Commerce Pushes for Health Care Reform
Thursday, July 02 @ 12:00:22 EDT by Staff (9 reads)
Chamber Affiliate NewsOrganization issues white paper; recommends measures to modernize the healthcare system.

Washington, DC - The United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC), the national representative for almost 3 million Hispanic-owned businesses, released a comprehensive white paper on healthcare this past week detailing recommendations to reform and improve the health care system that would address the needs of small businesses and would go a long way toward expanding coverage to all working people and their dependents.

The growing number of uninsured Americans constitutes a real problem for the small businesses in United States. Today, Hispanics represent 32 percent of the uninsured population in the country, an issue that hinders both their economic and health security and well being. The USHCC strongly urges President Obama and Congress to make every effort to ensure that the health care reform reaches everyone. The modernization of the health care system would not only ensure a better quality of life for the American society but also supports the growth of the national economy.

“In this challenging economy, we cannot neglect such a fundamental issue to our businesses and our employees. We must embrace the principle of shared responsibility to ensure access to health care that is second to none,” said David C. Lizárraga, USHCC Chairman of the Board. “The proposed health care policy in this white paper will help close the gaps within the system. Small businesses in the United States are suffering great harm under our current health care system and will likely fare far better under a substantially reformed system.”

Why Pittsburgh? Why Not? Pittsburgh Makes Perfect Sense for the G-20
Thursday, June 18 @ 15:08:11 EDT by Staff (56 reads)
Chamber Affiliate NewsThe upcoming G20 Summit in Pittsburgh on September 24-25, 2009 is an unprecedented opportunity to showcase the ‘new America’ to the leaders of the world economy. Pittsburgh today is a model for economic and environmental transformation in the United States and elsewhere.

§ Pittsburgh has survived wrenching economic change and reinvented itself. We engineered our comeback with a balanced, innovation-driven economy based on its strengths in advanced manufacturing, digital technologies, financial services, health care and life science, higher education and research, and energy solutions.

§ The Pittsburgh region has largely avoided the real estate meltdown that led to the global financial crisis.

§ During the ongoing recession, the region’s unemployment rate has tracked below the national average, and the gap is growing between the rising national jobless rate and Pittsburgh’s rate.

§ Central to half the population of the U.S. and Canada, the Pittsburgh region boasts a high quality of life, with a highly-rated concentration of performing and visual arts, and an affordable cost of living.
