The rise of Las Palmas also reflects the city's small but growing Latino community. According to the U.S. Census, 2.3 percent of Pittsburgh's population was Latino in 2010, below the Asian community at nearly 5 percent.
But Global Pittsburgh says the Latino population increased by 50 percent between 1990 and 2000. And since the 2010 census, it's "definitely growing," says Ivan Usero, membership committee chairman for the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
